6th Annual North Texas Wine Opener Raises $207,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Dallas, Texas - April 20, 2009 - Supporters of the North Texas Wine Opener gathered at TGI Fridays, 407 and 2499 in Flower Mound, on Saturday, April 18 to learn the total amount raised in the 2008-09 fundraising season, culminating in the gala event on March 28 at the Flower Mound Equestrian Center, which once again donated the use of its 10,000-square-foot enclosed riding arena.

Event chairs Patrick and Andrea Grubbs thanked attendees for their steadfast support and tireless efforts over the past nine months toward raising awareness and funds for the life threatening disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. The North Texas Wine Opener is the only all-volunteer run event in the nation for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, so the resulting total was even more meaningful.

"The fact that so many in the Flower Mound/Lewisville/Highland Village/Double Oak community came together and formed this event out of a desire to make a difference, and were able to raise more than a million dollars in six years is remarkable," says Patrick Grubbs. He announced the 2009 total -- $207,000 -- to the applause of the friends of CF, many of whom have worked on the event since its inception.

Representing the CFF, Director Sila Grogan was visibly moved and said: "To raise over $200,000 in this economy is more than we could have ever imagined, but it’s not surprising. If anyone could do it, it would be the North Texas Wine Opener team, which has continued to produce - by far - the most successful event of its kind in the nation for the CFF."

David Rapp, a native of Lewisville who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth, added: "We know this is a tough time for people so we really appreciate the continued support for the North Texas Wine Opener. I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for events like this one. Thank you to the volunteers, chairs and attendees for so generously giving your time, gifts and talents."

About Cystic Fibrosis

CF affects more than 30,000 children and adults in our country. The defective gene causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus which clogs the lungs and causes life-threatening infections. Many patients suffering from CF endure hours of physical therapy and dozens of medications every day just to fight infections and help their bodies absorb the nutrients they need to stay healthy. CF also affects the digestive system. As of now, there is no cure for the disease. Since the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation began in 1955, the life expectancy of a person with CF has risen from before school age to 36 years.

6th Annual North Texas Wine Opener Raises Awareness, Much-Needed Funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
-- Spring Cold Front Doesn't Deter 550 Ticket Holders from Bidding for a Cure --

Dallas, Texas - April 6, 2009 - On Saturday, March 28, the low temperature was 31°, but high bidders at the North Texas Wine Opener steadfastly braved the cold to help raise the bar on what the event has achieved in six short years. The near-capacity crowd gathered for a Texas-sized gala benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, with gourmet food from The Grotto and Salerno’s Italian Restaurant and imported Terrazas de los Andes Argentinean wine, graciously donated by Moet Hennessy-USA.

The Flower Mound Equestrian Center (FMEC), 7950 Cross Timbers Road, once again donated the use of its 10,000-square-foot enclosed riding arena and co-owners Chris and Cara Kiser, Ray and Julie Greer and David and Nicole Scherer made sure guests received a warm welcome by equipping the space with industrial-sized heaters. The FMEC partners, along with a generous friend and neighbor, contributed special equipment to help moderate temperatures in the barn.

Award-winning WFAA Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus set the tone for the successful evening, with heart-felt commentary about what it is like to live with cystic fibrosis and how fundraising efforts continue to add tomorrows for all those affected by the life-threatening disease.

"We all hear about deserving charities, like the American Heart Association and the Susan B. Komen organization, but cystic fibrosis is not a well known disease," Pete Delkus told the crowd. "Events like this one make a real difference and every dollar we raise impacts the lifespan of a child or young adult living with CF."

Dressed in their warmest Texas chic attire, patrons bid on hundreds of silent and "big board" auction items and followed a live auction with 19 incredible trips, experiences and original artwork presented by celebrity auctioneer Gary Pennycuff. The highlight was when a mixed breed puppy, complete with boarding and training provided by American Pet Spa & Resort, found a new home after fierce bidding drove the price up to $5,900. The generous family was one of the evening’s top donors and was applauded by the appreciative crowd and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

At the auction’s conclusion, Pete Delkus spontaneously offered one last item: A VIP tour of Channel 8 and dinner with Pete and Dale Hansen. A Flower Mound resident was the winning bidder on that exciting package. Finally, Dallas dance band Inside Out kicked off its second set with the Earth Wind and Fire hit "September" and packed the dance floor well past midnight.

Although the evening was festive and guests were in a celebratory mood, the cause is serious. There is no cure for cystic fibrosis and events like the North Texas Wine Opener are critical to funding research.

"We know this is a tough time for people so we really appreciate the continued support for the North Texas Wine Opener," says Patrick Grubbs, event co-chairperson. "This event wouldn’t have been successful without the many volunteers, sponsors and attendees. Thank you for generously giving your time, gifts and talents."

The 2009 event is over, but there remain three opportunities to contribute to the 2008-09 North Texas Wine Opener fundraising totals:

  1. Ed Kukol with Moet Hennessey will donate 50 cents from every bottle of Terrazas de los Andes sold in the next 30 days at Majestic-Highland Village, Goody Goody-Highland Village and WineStyles-Flower Mound.
  2. TGIFridays-Flower Mound will donate a percentage of all sales from Saturday, April 18. Family-friendly activities that day include a bounce house and face painting from 1 to 5 p.m. TGIFridays offers drink specials and event chairpersons from the North Texas Wine Opener will present a check to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at 5 p.m.
  3. Attendees can visit www.sillyheads.com to order photos and a commemorative poster from the event. A portion of proceeds benefit the CFF.

Flower Mound Equestrian Center 'Raises the Bar' for Cystic Fibrosis Research
-- Riders and Spectators Invited to a Benefit Horse Show on February 28, 2009 --

Flower Mound, Texas - February 3, 2009 - The owners of the Flower Mound Equestrian Center will once again open their barn doors to hundreds of ticket holders at the North Texas Wine Opener, slated for Saturday, March 28, 2009. One month before the 6th annual fundraiser, Ray and Julie Greer, David and Nicole Scherer and Chris and Cara Kiser will Raise the Bar on what they've been able to achieve for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with a benefit horse show on Saturday, February 28, 2009.

All of the horse riders, from beginners to blue ribbon winners, who compete and perform for the Raise the Bar charity horse show will donate the entry fee to the North Texas Wine Opener, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Interested equestrians should contact the FMEC by calling 817-430-3182 or emailing flower.mound.equest@gmail.com.

"We are proud to once again host the North Texas Wine Opener and to have been part of the team that has raised over $1 million, right here in the local community, to help find a cure for this terrible disease," says Julie Greer, co-owner of the Flower Mound Equestrian Center and North Texas Wine Opener chairperson. "The night of the Wine Opener, we move our horses away from the bustle and activity, so this equestrian exhibition gives us the chance to put our best ‘hooves' forward. Now everyone can experience the showmanship and splendor of both horse and rider."

The community is invited to attend the free event, which begins at 8 a.m. and runs through dusk, featuring a wide range of activities, from beginner Hunter classes to exciting Jumper classes. Texans, by birth or by choice, will enjoy Western favorites like Bareback on the Dollar, during which bareback riders must keep a dollar bill under their leg. If it falls out, the rider is eliminated; the winner, of course, keeps all of the dollars. The Egg & Spoon game requires riders to perform tricks while balancing an egg on a spoon. In addition to the action in the ring, horse enthusiasts can shop a vendor showcase with unique and exciting equine products and services.

Co-owner Cara Kiser helped plan the event and says it promises to be a memorable day of fun, laughter and equestrian sport, all for a great cause. "Flower Mound is horse country, but many of our neighbors haven't had the opportunity to see these majestic animals and their talented riders in action. We're looking forward to sharing our love for horses, all the while encouraging donations that can prolong the life of a child with cystic fibrosis."

The Flower Mound Equestrian Center is a family barn, run entirely by a volunteer staff. Children and teenagers trade chores for riding privileges and all are eager to participate in this fundraising event.

"FMEC students, young and old alike, volunteer their time, energy and manpower to prepare for this event," says Greer. "We have kids as young as 6 who will paint horse jumps, groom horses, and prepare the facility. It takes all of our FMEC family to host an event like this charity horse show and to welcome our neighboring barns."

The Flower Mound Equestrian Center, located at 7950 Cross Timbers Rd. in Flower Mound, offers Eventing, Hunter, Jumper, Dressage and Western lessons; horse training and horse management, full-care horse boarding; local, regional, and national horse shows; in-house schooling shows; horse clinics; youth activities; and horsemanship camps. Call 817-430-3182 or visit www.fmec.us for more information. In case of inclement weather, a later date will be set.

Flower Mound's New Texas Roadhouse Opens with Successful Fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis
-- Tips from Opening Weekend Bring in $3,831.01 for the North Texas Wine Opener --

Flower Mound's New Texas Roadhouse Opens with Successful Fundraiser for Cystic FibrosisDallas, Texas - December 12, 2008 - Before the doors of Flower Mound's newest restaurant were even officially open to the public, Texas Roadhouse made itself known as a generous community partner and a friend to the North Texas Wine Opener benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The affordable family restaurant held a soft opening the weekend of December 12-14 to prepare its team for the official grand opening on Monday, December 15. The invitation-only crowd enjoyed complementary tastings of Texas Roadhouse's fresh baked bread, hand-cut steaks, "fall off the bone" ribs, made-from-scratch sides and homemade dressings and desserts. Supporters of the CFF gladly contributed $3,831.01 in "tips" to benefit the Foundation and its 6th annual North Texas Wine Opener on March 28, 2009.

"Any other day, I'd raise a wine glass to both the generous patrons who attended that weekend and the enthusiastic and highly-efficient wait staff and management team at Texas Roadhouse," said Jill Welke, sponsor relations chair. "At Texas Roadhouse, I'd propose a toast with one of their ice-cold beers or legendary margaritas! Cheers to a great night of fun and fundraising and to everybody who made the weekend such a success for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!"

Known for its legendary food and service, menu variety and value, Texas Roadhouse always opens its restaurants by giving 100% of tips during its "trail run" weekend to a charitable cause. Managing Partner Richard Williams and Kitchen Manager Matt Carter were thrilled to partner with the North Texas Wine Opener and the CFF because they know how committed this community is to finding a cure.

"If we can help all those living with cystic fibrosis and support our new neighbors in Flower Mound/Lewisville/Highland Village, we've accomplished what we've set out to do," says Williams. "I just hope that the North Texas Wine Opener achieves its goal of raising awareness and funds for this life-threatening disease."

The 2009 event at the Flower Mound Equestrian Center is presented by Terrazas de los Andes and features Honorary Chair Pete Delkus greeting ticket holders, The Grotto and Salerno's Italian Restaurant providing fine cuisine and new musical talent Inside Out packing an even-bigger dance floor. Tickets are now on sale at www.cfwineopener.org. Wellington Lemonade Stands Raise $1500 for Cystic Fibrosis in One Day!
-- Families Band Together Once Again to Support the North Texas Wine Opener Fundraiser --

Wellington Lemonade Stands Raise $1500 for Cystic Fibrosis in One Day!Dallas, Texas - October 28, 2008 - Three years ago, Lauren and Kristen Burdick held their first lemonade stand with hopes of raising money for cystic fibrosis research. The disease affects many of our North Texas neighbors and is caused by a defective gene that makes the body produce abnormally thick, sticky mucus. This clogs the lungs and leads to other life threatening issues.

Asking for donations only, Lauren and Kristen raised $300 that first year. Since then, many other children and families have gotten involved with what is now known as Lemonade Pals, raising $2,500 in four short years.

On October 18, 2008, Wellington residents David, Lisa, Lauren and Kristen Burdick; Wendy, Emily and Grace Weems; Hannah Kakos, Cole and Maddie Irvin; and George Patrick manned one of two lemonade stands in the Wellington subdivision that raised $1500.01 in one day, thanks to many generous passersby and a deluge of email messages that promoted the fundraiser in the days leading up to it.

As always, 100 percent of donations benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which spearheads critical medical research and drug therapy. All of the students wish to express their appreciation to caring Wellington friends and neighbors for supporting this great cause.

The 2009 event is planned for Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Flower Mound Equestrian Center, with Honorary Chair Emmy award winning WFAA-TV Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus greeting ticket holders; The Grotto providing its fine cuisine; and new musical talent packing an even-bigger dance floor. Volunteers, sponsors, and supporters of the North Texas Wine Opener gathered at the Highland Village home of John and Carol Carter on May 9 to announce the total raised and present the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with a check for $271,000.Dallas, Texas - May 12, 2008 - Volunteers, sponsors, and supporters of the North Texas Wine Opener gathered at the Highland Village home of John and Carol Carter on May 9 to announce the total raised and present the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with a check for $271,000. This check represents the net proceeds from the event on March 29, 2008; the funds will support scientific research directed toward finding a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF).

Event co-chairs Jill and Eric Welke said: "We were blown away by the success of this event. Every dollar raised from the NTWO is appreciated and will do so much good for our neighbors who continuously fight this life-threatening disease."

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, ranked number one among health-related charities by The New York Times and Smart Money Magazine, puts every dollar raised to good use. In fact, 90 cents on every dollar goes directly to research.

And once again, the North Texas Wine Opener has the distinction of being the single-most successful fundraising event of its kind in the nation. Expenses are held to a minimum so the maximum amount can go toward research and development. In fact, since the event's inception five years ago, expenses have been held to an incredibly low eight percent of the total raised.

At the check presentation, college student Lauren Lancaster, who has cystic fibrosis, thanked those present by saying: "To be standing here at 21 is amazing. The life expectancy they gave me when I was born was about 13. I'm here largely because of you."

Flower Mound residents Jill and Eric Welke founded the event five years ago to raise funds and awareness for a little girl in Bridlewood, Megan Andersen and all young adults affected by the life-threatening disease. The bedroom communities of Flower Mound, Highland Village, Double Oak and Lewisville rallied around the cause and each year have raised more money earmarked for the cure.

Bob Jones, father of 9-year-old Matthew Jones, said "Every time I get around supporters of this event, it shows me how much people want to make a difference. Matthew, who has cystic fibrosis, is in the hospital now; he's down but he's a fighter and he will get back up. The research we have is the greatest it's been in the history of cystic fibrosis and will continue because of support from people like you."

More than 700 guests attended the sold-out event on March 29 at the Flower Mound Equestrian Center. Guests, dressed in their Texas best, enjoyed gourmet food by renowned chefs Morris and Mike Salerno, fabulous breads by Pain Delice and a selection of fine Terrazas de los Andes wines donated by Moet Hennessey USA. The evening included a silent and live auction presented by celebrity auctioneer Gary Pennycuff and music by the Def!nitely Maybe band. Former WFAA-Channel 8 weatherman Troy Dungan served as honorary chairperson.

"Many thanks go out to the generous attendees who made the night such an overwhelming success," said Eric Welke. "This event has truly touched the lives of the children and young adults living with CF."

A Tasteful Alliance: Salerno Family Partners with North Texas Wine Opener

Morris & Mike Salerno Family - News ConnectionEverything's bigger about the 2008 North Texas Wine Opener--10,000 square feet of space in its new venue (the Flower Mound Equestrian Center), a cumulative fundraising total nearing $1 million and four times the seating capacity. And with hundreds of people with discriminating tastes sure to be on hand for the festive event this spring, the culinary provider at this year's Wine Opener had some big boots to fill, too.

That's why there is not one, but two acclaimed local restaurants catering the 2008 Wine Opener - Morris Salerno's The Grotto and Mike Salerno's Salerno's Italian Restaurant.

It was bound to happen. In addition to his work with PediPlace, CASA and the Flower Mound, Lewisville and Lake symphony orchestras, Morris Salerno has supported the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for nine years, even serving on the board of directors at one time.

Over the years, he has contributed chef dinners that have brought in thousands of dollars in the Wine Opener's live auction and countless hours of his time to finding a cure for this life-threatening disease.

"It's remarkable how much energy there is in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation," said Morris. "You can't help but get involved with it!"

His first cousin Mike Salerno, owner of Salerno's Restaurant, has been equally devoted to the Lewisville Special Olympics and the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation. This former teacher and coach stepped up to share the enormous task of catering an event of this size because of his commitment to giving back to the community and the civic responsibility that was instilled in him by his parents and grandparents.

Mike and Morris were born and reared in Dallas, Texas but their family ties are to Sicily, Italy. Their grandparents, Mela and Nick Salerno, were first generation Americans and the boys grew up learning how to cook and appreciate old-world recipes.

While neither of their fathers were chefs, their family's love of hospitality and food inspired Morris to open his first restaurant in Coppell in 1984 - the Salerno Pizza Co. on Sandy Lake Road. Morris and Mike then opened Salerno's in Flower Mound in 1985, back when the population sign read 3,000.

"One of the reasons we didn't stay in Dallas was because we wanted to start our own legacy and grow with the city," said Morris. "Like Campisi's and Prego in Dallas."

That first year, they were recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as Business of the Year and they've been active supporters of local organizations ever since, like Kiwanis, Women of Highland Village, Women of Flower Mound, the Chamber and Rotary.

It was that reputation that led Eric and Jill Welke, co-chairs of the North Texas Wine Opener, to approach the Salernos about taking on the catering for the 2008 event.

"We knew once he took a look at the new location - a 10,000-square-foot horse arena that will be entirely floored for the event, with enough seating for 700+ guests, Morris and Mike would be as excited as we are," said Jill Welke, co-chair. "There'll be dancing, a live band, plenty of seating and an exciting live and silent auction ... just the sort of festive event that the Salernos would want to be a part of."

Plans are underway for a menu that reflects the best of both restaurants - Salerno's true Italian recipes and Grotto's New American cuisine.

Ticket holders can expect to be wowed by passed hors d' oeuvres and a sumptuous buffet dinner. Look for signature dishes such as Steak Salerno and new and exciting creative samplings.

The Welkes, Salernos, sponsors and volunteers share a passion for someday soon making cystic fibrosis stand for ‘cure found' and are working hard to make the 2008 event a success.

"Before I die, I am convinced there is going to be a cure," said Morris. "They've isolated some things, developed new medicine and the networking among CF researchers is almost unprecedented in the field of medicine. Ten years ago, the average life span was in the 20s and now it's 36. They are so close to a cure!"

Tickets are on sale now for the 2008 North Texas Wine Opener benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, planned for March 29 at the Flower Mound Equestrian Center (1171 and High Road). Watch for an announcement soon on the new celebrity honorary chairperson.

5th Annual North Texas Wine Opener
Moves to the Flower Mound Equestrian Center March 29, 2008
-- Greers, Kisers & Scherers Donate Use of 10,000-Square-Foot Facility --

Flower Mound Equestrian Center: Greers, Kisers, Scherers & FriendsDallas, Texas - February 11, 2008 - Big changes are in store for attendees of the #1 wine opener event in the country for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, including the award-winning cuisine of The Grotto and Salerno's; the Argentinean wines of Terrazas de los Andes; Troy Dungan serving as honorary chair; and a change in venue to accommodate the growing number of attendees.

"Because this event has always kept its expenses to an absolute bare minimum, it was essential that we find just the right venue that would be in line with our high expectations for a first-rate evening of entertainment, yet be within our budget," said Jill Welke, co-chair of the North Texas Wine Opener.

Chris and Cara Kiser, co-owners of the Flower Mound Equestrian Center, have supported the North Texas Wine Opener since its inception, serving in leadership positions over the years. The Kisers, Ray and Julie Greer, and David and Nicole Scherer, partners and co-owners of the equestrian center, generously agreed to donate the use of the enormous facility for the evening.

A 10,000-square-foot indoor riding arena will be completely floored for the evening's festivities and its regular residents, Rocky, Sienna and Rio, will be temporarily relocated. Table seating for 750 will be available and valet parking and a covered entryway will add to the guests' comfort the evening of the event.

Throughout the year, the full-service equestrian center offers eventing, hunter, jumper, dressage and Western lessons; horse training and horse management, full-care horse boarding; local, regional and national horse shows; in-house schooling shows; horse clinics; youth activities; and horsemanship camps. Flower Mound residents Robert Taylor and Gianna Aycock lead the training program.

The Kisers, Greers and Scherers decided to purchase FMEC and take on the enormous task of renovating it when the facility where they previously boarded their horses closed its doors.

"Our goal has always been to set the standard among the Dallas-Fort Worth equestrian community," says Julie Greer. "Our families have a deep love for horses and riding. That's why it's so important to us that we consistently offer the highest quality of professional services and a safe, friendly environment that is both nurturing and caring to our clients, staff and animals."

Chris Kiser added: "Since acquiring and renovating the equestrian center, we have achieved many things, but helping to raise money for this worthwhile cause will be among our proudest accomplishments."

NORTH TEXAS WINE OPENER BRINGS IN $245,000 FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS

On June 18, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters of the North Texas Wine Opener, presented by Strange & Downing, P.C., CPAs, gathered at the Highland Village home of John and Carol Carter to present the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with a check for $245,000.Dallas, Texas - June 19, 2007 - On June 18, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters of the North Texas Wine Opener, presented by Strange & Downing, P.C., CPAs, gathered at the Highland Village home of John and Carol Carter to present the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with a check for $245,000. This check represents the proceeds raised at the event on May 5, 2007; the funds will be used to support scientific research directed toward finding a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF).

"Now more than ever, we are dedicated to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis," said co-chair Jill Welke. "Many of the families and individuals we've come to know over the past five years since the event was founded are battling the side effects of this life-threatening disease - some from their hospital beds. We want to do everything we can to fund research to find a cure."

Eric Welke added: "I think I speak for all of the volunteers of the North Texas Wine Opener when I say that every dollar raised from the event is appreciated ... and will do so much good for our friends, our neighbors, and all those continuously fighting this disease."

Expenses are kept to a minimum and were amazingly only 5 percent of the total raised.

At the check presentation, one of the local CF patients summed it up when he said, "Everything that you do - this event, the money raised - it all helps me to lead a relatively normal life. I really want to thank you all."

More than 500 guests attended the event on May 5 at Celebrations in Highland Village. Guests enjoyed gourmet food by Sonoma Grill & Wine Bar, fabulous breads by Pain Delice, a selection of fine wines, a silent and live auction presented by celebrity auctioneer Gary Pennycuff, and live music by Jeff Atkins. Former Dallas Cowboy football player Drew Pearson served as honorary chairperson.

"Many thanks go out to the generous attendees who made the night such an overwhelming success," said Eric Welke. "We hope they will mark their calendars as plans are already underway for next year's event; there are going to be some exciting changes."

Generous financial sponsors include: Strange & Downing, P.C., CPAs (presenting sponsor); Baby Lyla's Angel Foundation; Flower Mound Family Funeral Home; Graphic Converting, LTD; Merrill Lynch - Benson, Ardoyno & Associates; PressCut Industries; Brandes Insurance Agency; Dancin' Feet by Jana; Dr. Kevin R. In addition, the Welkes offer special thanks to American Airlines, the News Connection, event sponsors, bid-for-a-cure donors and the many volunteers and chairmen who worked towards making the 2007 North Texas Wine Opener a huge success.

Sponsors, Donors Reap Benefits of Donations to North Texas Wine Opener
By Beth Spencer, NTWO Publicity Co-Chair

February 23, 2007 - Area businesses will find no shortage of activities, groups, and causes to support with their time and financial resources. Over the last few years, the North Texas Wine Opener has become an event that draws much backing from local sponsors and donors. Last year, the event raised over $219,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), thanks in large part to the generous contributions made by area residents.

Ranked number one among health-related charities by The New York Times Smart Money Magazine, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is said to be a wise investment for individuals and business who want to give back to the community.

Joe Strange is the proprietor of Strange & Downing, P.C. Certified Public Accountants and presenting sponsor for the last three years. He explained that "when we consider a charity, we look at administration cost. The CF organization impressed us." He was also pleasantly surprised when he "crunched the numbers" and learned that 92 cents of every dollar raised for CF goes directly to research. Many non-profits allocate an average of 84 cents on the dollar to support their programs and research, according to a 2004 Forbes.com report.

There's another reason why sponsorship, specifically with the North Texas Wine Opener, makes good business sense for area businesses, says David Cotten, fundraising chair for the event.

A recent demographic study showed that three major zip codes in this area are indexing high for the $100,000+ level income range, and most of the households in this area are defined as affluent suburban spreads. According to an article in the March 2005 Business Wire, 70 percent of people with incomes above $75,000 will give $100 to $5000 a year. The additional disposable income benefits donors and sponsors, who often see increased patronage based on their visibility at the event.

"With over 450 attendees, 75 volunteers, 50 sponsors, and over 40 media spots annually, the NTWO has become the premier charitable community event for local businesses to support in the Highland Village / Flower Mound / Lewisville area," said Cotten.

When Wine Styles owners Bob and Kelly Johnstone were approached last year to support the event, they felt like it was a good match given their business' focus. "The goal is to draw people... and people love wine. If we can help attract people to a charitable event like this in an area lacking medical grant attention, we are glad to be of service to the CF cause," Bob Johnstone said.

Local support of the NTWO ensures improved quality of life and increased longevity for cystic fibrosis patients here in North Texas. Currently, the median age of survival for people with cystic fibrosis has risen to the mid-30s, up from the late teens not too many years ago.

"The generosity of the donors and sponsors is unbelievable," said Marina Dooley, whose 15-year-old daughter Mary was diagnosed with CF several years ago. "We are so grateful for the community support for this event and for the CFF. Every dollar raised helps a CF patient."

For Megan and Jeff Condrack, who own Megan's and Little Bo'tique West in Parker Square, participating in this event is a labor of love. "The reason I got involved was Megan Andersen. I joke about her being my namesake."

Megan was the child who, when diagnosed with CF at 18 months, inspired her Bridlewood neighbors, Eric and Jill Welke and Dr. David and Meaghan Evanich, to raise funds to find a cure.

"Her family used to come into our store," she explained. "After I heard the story, I wanted to help. As we've participated and met more children, I can't imagine not being able to breathe."

As to why they continue to support the cause: "We take away far more than we give."

The 4th Annual North Texas Wine Opener is set for May 5, 2007 at Celebrations in Highland Village with former Dallas Cowboy football player Drew Pearson serving as the honorary chairperson. The gala event will feature gourmet food by award-winning Sonoma Grill & Wine Bar and a selection of boutique wines from around the world.

The evening includes a silent and live auction presented by celebrity live auctioneer Gary D. Pennycuff, GDP Auctioneer Services, and live music throughout the evening. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

This check represents proceeds raised at the event which will be used to support scientific research toward finding a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF).

"Of this total, over 90 cents on the dollar will fund research to help buy time for the more than 30,000 American children and adults who suffer from CF," said Amy Van Vranken, Associate Executive Director of the Northeast Texas chapter. "Every person who attended, contributed, and volunteered can feel proud of that fact. And, as the nation's only volunteer-run event, the record-breaking total raised is even more extraordinary."

"As we approach our fourth year of chairing this event, our eyes never stray from the prize - living in a world where CF stands for cure found," said co-chairs Jill and Eric Welke. "With the generous support of our sponsors, CF families, and volunteers, we have been able to achieve the distinction of becoming the single-most successful fundraising event of its kind in the nation. We are proud to be affiliated with such a worthwhile organization and team of people."

The check presentation party was held at Capriccio Ristorante in Flower Mound's Parker Square. Thanks to the generosity of the evening's underwriter, owner Najam Jaffri, guests enjoyed a Tuscan feast while they awaited word of the year's grand total of dollars raised.

More than 450 guests attended the event held on April 29 at Celebrations in Highland Village. Guests enjoyed gourmet food by Sonoma Grill & Wine Bar, desserts by Sweet Italy, fabulous breads by Pain Delice, a selection of fine wines, a silent and live auction presented by celebrity auctioneer Gary Pennycuff, and live music by Dr. Bonneau's Jazz Trio. The New 103.7 LITE FM Morning Team Gene & Julie were the emcee guest hosts.

Plans are already underway for next year's event on May 5, 2007. The first official event takes place in October 2006 with a Kick Off Party to generate auction items.
